JTI, a new state-of-the-art factory in Romania to strengthen European operations

JTI will build a new, state-of-the-art factory in Ștefăneștii de Jos (Ilfov County) to strenghten its European operaitons. Designed to replace the current Bucharest production site — which is operating under space constraints, the facility is scheduled for completion in 2027.

A phased transition will follow to ensure the smooth transfer of production from the existing factory to the new location. Ground works will begin in the coming weeks.

This new investment reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to the country and marks another milestone in JTI’s three‑decade presence in Romania. It reflects its strategic ambition to further strengthen its manufacturing capabilities and operational excellence in Europe.

Philip Livingston, JTI Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain, stated: “As a global company, we continuously seek opportunities to optimize our manufacturing footprint and drive sustainable growth. This commitment applies to all the countries where we operate and maintain production facilities. Our Romania factory has outstanding performance, with record‑breaking production figures and a deeply engaged and motivated team. We are excited to build on this momentum by further strengthening our capabilities.”

From Romania exported to 70 countries

JTI’s factory in Romania currently exports around 75% of its production to more than 70 countries worldwide, serving as one of the company’s key manufacturing hubs in Europe. The site has a long track record of excellence and innovation: in 2009, it became the first in Romania to earn the “5S Best in Class” certification, a key principle of the Kaizen continuous improvement system.

Klaus‑Walter Thul, Factory Lead at JTI Romania, added: “Since the beginning of our operations in 1994, we have expanded numerous times. We’re committed to continuously upgrading our production capacity, investing in state-of-the-art equipment, and delivering high-quality products. This new investment reflects both our strategic ambition to consolidate our presence in Romania and the trust and recognition we’ve earned within JTI.”

Over the years, JTI has continuously invested in the modernization and expansion of its Romanian operations. In 2012, the company invested EUR 25 million to increase its production capacity, creating over 125 new jobs. In 2021, JTI launched a EUR 60 million investment program to further upgrade its facilities, implemented over three years.Today, more than 630 people work at JTI’s factory in Bucharest, out of a total of over 1,500 JTI employees across the country.

JTI, a member of the JT Group, sells its products in over 130 markets with the goal of bringing exceptional tobacco and nicotine experiences to its adult consumers. JTI is the global owner of both Winston and Camel, respectively the second and third largest combustible brands in the world. Other global brands include MEVIUS and LD. It is also present in the Reduced‑Risk Products category with its heated tobacco brand, Ploom, vaping brand Logic, and Nordic Spirit nicotine pouches.
